Christian Spirituality

The Christian Spirituality specialism, offered in partnership with the St Hild Centre for Spirituality, gives you the chance to deepen your study of Christian spiritual traditions. Each year, a range of modules is available, which you can take as freestanding courses or as part of a pathway towards a Durham University award.

These modules open the door to full postgraduate awards (PG Cert, PG Diploma or MA) largely or completely devoted to the study of Spirituality.

Deeper Roots and Wider Horizons

At St Hild, we believe in working together to foster ‘Deeper Roots, Wider Horizons’ for Christian disciples and ministers. As a St Hild student, you will naturally share in the regular worship and formational life woven through our study centres and ministerial programmes — and the Centre for Christian Spirituality is here to deepen that journey further, alongside others who share your commitment.

We offer:

  • Taught courses at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level, which you can take as part of your Durham University academic programme.
  • Quiet days and retreats, held online and in person throughout the year, for moments of spiritual refreshment alongside fellow students.
  • ‘Rooted’ — our monthly contemplative oasis online, a space to pause and reconnect with your community.

We’d love for you to make the most of these opportunities during your time with us.

Our soul is like a stream of water… When that stream is as it should be, we are constantly refreshed and exuberant in all we do, because our soul itself is then profusely rooted in the vastness of God and his kingdom.” – Dallas Willard.
